Who Is Garth Watrous? The Hatmaker Behind Bridger
6 min read
Garth Watrous is the founder of Bridger and Chairman of American Hat Makers, a family company with over 50 years in the hat trade. He has 22 years of sobriety and built Bridger from a conviction that the right hat, built with real craft and a real purpose, belongs in more hands.
Hatmaking runs in the Watrous name.
It always has.
Gary Watrous started American Hat Makers in the early 1970s out of the back of a station wagon, selling leather goods at craft fairs before a talented hatmaker took him under his wing and changed the direction of the company. What started as a small craft operation grew into a business that has made over a million hats and collected more than 16,000 five-star reviews across its range. Gary still comes in. Garth runs everything else.
Garth joined the sales team at 15, before he was old enough to drive. He hired his brother to take him to the shows, and his brother took half the money, so Garth fired him shortly after. At 16 he was loading 400 to 500 hats into a van and driving cross-country alone to set up festival booths. This was 1990, so there was no GPS and no cell phone, just a map and a calendar of shows.
It is where the knowledge came from: sourcing, production, design, how to read a customer, how to hold a margin. He learned all of it before most people his age had a summer job, and he has been working the trade for over 45 years.

He does not talk much about the before.
He talks about the now.
Garth has been sober for 22 years. He says that plainly because it is a fact of his life, not a marketing angle. It shapes who Bridger is built for: the sponsor who showed up at 6 a.m. when he did not have to, and the pastor who keeps his word on a Tuesday when no one is watching. The man who has been stacking 30-day chips for years knows the weight of every single one.
It also shapes who buys it. The woman who has watched someone she loves do the hard work of staying. The daughter standing in front of a shelf trying to find something that means something without having to explain it. The hat does not need to say any of that out loud. The verse is inside. That is enough.
Every Bridger hat hides a scripture reference stitched inside the crown and gives a portion of every sale to a named charity partner. If you want to understand how that works, start here: how the hidden verse works.

He tried to build this hat for a long time.
Bridger is the one that worked.
Garth spent more than a decade trying to build a faith-based cap line with real craft behind it. He went through more than 20 agencies over the years, wrote checks that returned nothing, and hit walls that most founders would have called the end. He has a summary for the whole arc: "The overnight success. It just took 50 years."
What changed was the decision to hide something instead of announce it. The verse is inside the cap, not outside. The coin is on select styles if you look for it. The giving is built into the price. That restraint is the whole point, because Bridger is not for the person who wants to display their faith. It is for the person who lives it quietly and does not need an audience.
Garth co-founded Bridger with Dayna Lee Cornelius, who brought years of premium hatmaking expertise to the line. Every style was built with a specific person in mind: the Ledger for the one who leads quietly, the Homestead for the one who holds the family together, the Carpenter for the one who does the work without applause. The craft standard is not borrowed from a trend. It comes from a family that has been building hats since before Garth could drive.

Bridger is for the people who carry weight
without announcing it.
The woman who stands in front of a shelf trying to figure out what to give the man who never asks for anything. The father who shows up at the game even when he has nothing left, and the rancher who needs a cap that holds its shape through a long season of real work. The veteran who does not talk about it but carries it every day.
That is who buys Bridger and who wears it. The hat does not announce anything, and the verse is invisible to everyone else. What matters is that the person wearing it knows it is there, and Garth built it that way because that is how he understands faith: not performed, carried.
Twelve styles, priced between $49 and $79. Every hat ships with the verse inside and a portion of every sale committed to the named charity partner. For those who want to understand the build, start with are Bridger hats well made. See the full collection at bridgerhatco.com.
